36 kW ripple generator for BMW AG

July 2022: BMW AG places an order for 36 kW ripple generator with BOLAB Systems GmbH. This is to test inverters for BEV/PHEV vehicles in the voltage range up to 1000 V in accordance with the common standards LV 123, ISO 21498-2, BMW GS 95023, etc.

This modular system consists of three independently acting 4-quadrant amplifier systems with an output of 12 kW each. As an alternative to its use as universal individual systems, two or three of these systems can be operated in parallel for a total output of up to 36 kW. This parallel system design enables AC+DC currents of more than 1300 A. Future scalability of up to 54 kW output is ensured by the modular system concept.
In particular, the unique 4-quadrant amplifier solution is used to superimpose frequencies on the vehicle electrical system. This is possible for 12 V, 24 V, 48 V, as well as for high-voltage vehicle electric systems up to 1000 V. The intelligent solution approach of the serial operation of a high-voltage source with a BOLAB 4-quadrant amplifier system also allows not only the imprinting of interference frequencies such as AC voltages, but also short-term interference pulses. These include the load dump tests of the automotive standards. The almost loss-free serial coupling allows the continuous testing of the entire frequency range from 10 Hz to 150 KHz in one test run. This contrasts with the lossy inductive coupling transformer superimposition, in which several coupling transformers are necessary to switch between different frequency ranges.

AN-SERIES

The AN-Series, an artificial network offered by BOLAB, is designed to accurately replicate the impedance of the vehicle power-net for component testing of voltage class B (high voltage) components. With its analog system boasting a bandwidth of up to 150 kHz, the AN-Series plays a critical role in ensuring the proper testing of such components in hybrid and electric vehicles. By effectively absorbing and reproducing interferences generated by the device under test, including ripple, dynamics, spikes, and other higher frequency noise, the artificial network creates conditions akin to those found in the high voltage power-net of vehicles.
